1. Pre-load your power-to help get a good weight shift to the right side, address the ball with 60-65 percent of your weight already toward the back.
2. Strengthen your grip-this doesn't mean hold the club tighter. If anything lighten your grip pressure. Rotate both hands clockwise, slightly, so that left hand is more on top of the club and right hand more to side.
3. Widen your stance-narrower stances are good for accuracy, but if you plan to hit it big, spread out your feet and create a wider turning base.
4. Keep the takeaway low-amateurs have a tendency to lift the club on the backswing; allow the clubhead to move back low to the ground for at least 15 to 18 inches before feel the wrists begin to hinge.
5. Extend the right arm-practice keeping the right arm extended on the backswing until it naturally fold. This widens the swing arc and immediately creates more power potential.
6. Hang some clothes at the top-the feeling at the top of the backswing is that of creating a clothesline that points directly at the target. Have the slightest possible pause, which allows for a transition to the downswing, at the top. Set some clothes on that line.
7. Maintain knee spacing-don't allow the legs to collapse on the downswing. The time for the knees to touch is at the finish, not at the impact. All big hitters have separation of their thighs at impact.
8. Hit through several balls-I want to feel at impact that I'm not hitting just one ball, but that the club is traveling down the line so far that I could hit 8 or 10 balls in a row. This creates extension after impact to match the extension of the backswing.
9. 11 o'clock finish-the ideal finish position for a big driver is to have the right shoulder pointing at 11 o'clock, or put another way, to the of the target line. You can't get to this position without fully releasing the club, another prime ingredient for greater distance.
10. Hold the pose-one of the biggest power drains is to be out of balance. Even long drivers, who take enormous swings, know they must maintain balance. Practice swings from impact to finish, holding the pose of a great finish position.
