| A Full Back Swing, For Longer and Straighter Drives Driving Tip 5 of 5 | |
|
One of the most common mistakes players, even good players, make when looking down a narrow fairway is they try to steer the shot. This usually results in a short back swing, followed by a rushed and jerky downswing, finishing up with an off-balanced follow through. It isn't pretty but don't give up hope, there is an answer. First, take a deep breath. Relax and just concentrate on a long and complete back swing (including a full shoulder turn). If you swing the club back to it's proper position 75% of the battle is over. It's almost impossible to steer the club head through the shot if you take a complete back swing. A full back swing allows you to swing the club head down the target line and release your hands through the impact zone. This results in longer, straighter drives. A simple exercise to understand this is; take a baseball and try to throw it, at a target while only taking your arm half way back. You will notice you have very little power or control. Now, throw the ball making your normal full throwing motion and see the difference. You will feel the increase in power and your throw will be much more accurate. This difference is exactly the same within your golf swing. A short or restricted back swing will not allow you to swing the club properly through the hitting area. Remember, most good golf shots start with a full and relaxed back swing. |
