Many good players, including several touring pros, have adopted a cross-handed putting stroke after struggling with the conventional approach. The cross-handed style accomplishes several things that a conventional grip does not.

For starters, it prevents your left hand and wrist from hinging or breaking down through impact. It also keeps the shoulders level at address and at impact. This serves to keep the putter low to the ground on the follow-through, which is much more desirable than lifting it off the ground abruptly after contact. The cross-handed stroke also gives players the feeling that the left hand and arm are controlling the stroke. With the conventional method, many players have the feeling that the right hand ‘takes over’ resulting in poor direction and distance control.
